Mike Nunn – Link Transit Manager
Paul Mauney is currently the Publisher of the Times-News and has been in the newspaper business all his life. Paul is orignally from Cleveland County and has two children; one who attends ACC and will be transferring to NC State and one who is 13 years old and attends Western Alamance.
Paul introduced our speaker, Mike Nunn, Alamance County’s Link Transit Manager. Mike attended both Appalachian State and UNC-Chapel Hill and has spent over 20 years in transportation planning.
Alamance County began discussions for public transportation fourteen years ago. We are the only urbanized community in NC without public transportation. One barrier has been our lack of public sidewalks.
80% of the funding for our Link Transit system is coming from the federal government in the form of grant money. We have passed on these available grant funds in years past due to our lack of public transportation option.
The Link Transit system will run Monday through Friday from 5:30am to 6:30pm and will start up on June 6th. There is a $1 fare each way with free transfers. Reduced fare options of $.50 are available for senior citizens over age 60, students and Medicare card holders. All fares are free during the month of June. There are 5 total routes serving Burlington, Gibsonville and Alamance Community College.
Each light transit vehicle can hold 22 passengers sitting and 6-7 standing. Buses only stop at designated bus stops. Each bus stop is identified with a route color. Link Transit operates from a transfer hub on Worth Street, near the Historic Depot. Real time bus tracking is available online or by downloading the TransLoc Rider mobile app.
Video equipment is located on the exterior and interior of each vehicle to ensure passenger safety.
