Phil Moseley: Husband, Father, Attorney, Past President of the Graham Rotary Club, Current Assistant District Governor, and Sled Dog Racer Extraordinaire
Katie introduced Phil, claiming that he had not cooperated by sending her his bio. By consulting the internet, she was able to find out all kinds of interesting things about this remarkable man. He grew up in Henderson, NC and attended UNC, where he obtained his undergraduate and law degrees. You can read about most of his legal credentials and accomplishments at the Holt, Longest, Wall, Blaetz, and Moseley website, but you will not find there that for years he bred Siberian Husky sled dogs and raced them, winning some twenty races. In Rotary, Phil has distinguished himself by serving as president of his club and ADG since 2013. He is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Benefactor. He has been married to Lynn for over forty years and has two daughters. He told the club that our board meeting was one of the best he has ever attended, which reflects well on Katie’s leadership. He introduced our speaker, District Governor Larry Lassiter.
Program: Larry Lassiter, District 7690 Governor for 2015-16
District Governor Larry Lassiter is a native of Randolph County, NC. He has his own CPA firm on Troy, NC. He has been in Rotary since 1981, with a brief hiatus. He is a Paul Harris Fellow, a Major Donor and Benefactor, served two terms as president of his club in Troy, and served as ADG in area 8 for three years. In his spare time he enjoys golf and driving his Porsche. He is married to Deloris, who sat with him at the front table, and has three children and six grandchildren. He is picture at the far left in the photo, along with President Katie Dukeshire and ADG Phil Moseley.
Larry opened his remarks by thanking each Rotarian in our club for their participation and support of Rotary. He stated that he visited our club some time ago. He also acknowledged two former District Governors who are members: Julian Griffin and Charlie Cobb. He took time to congratulate Brian Dement who is the newest Paul Harris Fellow in our club. He said that worldwide only 3% of all Rotarians are PHFs, but they account for some 33% of all the money given to the Rotary Foundation. Larry mentioned the many ways our club serves our community and told us that over the years we have contributed more than $208,000 to the Rotary Foundation.
DG Lassiter spoke about visiting a school in a slum district in Rio which our district helped to build, saying that most Rotarians never have the opportunity to see the worldwide work of Rotary. This school feeds and instructs some 400 children. He said he is honored and humbled to serve as our District Governor and depends greatly on Deloris’ support. He spent the remainder of the his time catching us up on Rotary International’s goals, the forward progress of Polio Plus, and emphasizing the importance of including the family in Rotary events. He quoted Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, by saying that Rotary must be evolutionary at all times and revolutionary occasionally if we are to fulfill our potential as an organization and stay relevant. He mentioned this year’s theme – Be a Gift to the World – and reminded us to have fun. He encouraged us to attend next Spring’s District Conference at the Greenbrier on April 22-24. He said that district leadership is always available to help as needed. Each member matters.
At the conclusion, Katie presented Larry with a certificate acknowledging a donation made by our club in his name to the Heart Fund.
