Club Business
President Jim Cartner opened the meeting. Brian Dement led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Our guest this week was Joseph Williams’ lovely daughter, Abby. She was a nice addition today. Jim made a “first reading” of Ryan Risko’s name, our most recent membership applicant.
Next week our new officers and board will be installed. There will be no meeting on July 2.

John Beshell grew up in the Chicago area. He received his doctorate in chiropractic from the Palmer College of Chiropractic. After graduation he moved to NC, ending up in Burlington, where he had lived for the last twenty years. Later his brother moved to the area and opened a second office. John has been chiropractor of the year for 17 of the last twenty years. He has a wonderful son and daughter.
Program: Chuck Marsh and Tom Britt – The Maverick
Chuck Marsh spoke at one of our meetings last year as the guest speaker for Sang Ho Lee. Since then he has further developed his plan to bring local radio to the area called The Maverick. Quoted from the station’s blog page:
We are going to give this radio station back to the community! We’ll be at every event in the area and even plan to create our own events in 2019. This will be a hyper local radio station!!! All 3 signals will be one radio brand focused on super serving Alamance County!!! I want to create a station where you have to listen because if you don’t, you’re going to miss something! Local News, Traffic, and Weather with the legendary Tom Britt of Fox 8 News who lives right here in Burlington!
Tom Britt was also on hand today. According to Chuck, Tom is the world’s busiest retiree. Tom will handle local news, weather, and traffic. Tom told us that the Maverick is trying to overcome what happened after the 1996 law that allowed three big companies to gobble up the nation’s small radio stations. These big companies created national shows and ignored smaller communities. The Maverick is putting the spotlight on Alamance County.
Chuck’s former broadcasting partner, Leanne Petty, will also be part of the morning show. Chuck said he wants the Maverick to be known as the first place to contact to get out community news. In the Fall, Alamance County high school football will be broadcast, using a brand new tower in Buckhorn.
Chuck concluded by stating our community has shown tremendous support for his station.
Conclusion
Sam Powell’s table held the winning ticket today. He drew the Queen of Spades, which left the Queen of Diamonds secure in her hideaway. Only 41 cards are left! Jim adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
