Rotarian Responsible for Today’s Program: Brooke Carpenter
Brooke is a financial advisor at Betty Andrews Investments. He was an Eagle Scout, a West Point grad, and loves to fish. He introduced his mother, today’s speaker.
Dr. Carol Thornell, Ed.D. – Peace Corps
Carol is a Burlington resident. She earned a BA and MA from William and Mary and a doctorate in education from UNC. She has lived in a variety of locations across the continental United States and overseas, including a two-year stint as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. She remarked that the Peace Corps and Rotary have common values.
Begun in 1961 by President Kennedy, the Peace Corps now sends ambassadors for peace and the United States to 141 countries. Originally mostly young people volunteered, but now many more seasoned citizens participate, bringing more experience of how to work in team and bridge cultures.
Carol recounted some of her adventures in rural Thailand, where she lived for two years in a remote village teaching English to Thai teachers. She shared a little of what she learned of the culture and language. She concluded that the Peace Corps has done much good around the world, citing that ASEAN (Association of SE Asian Nations) adopted English, due in large measure to good will engendered by the Peace Corps. This has been a huge boost to our national influence in the area.
Conclusion
There was no drawing today, which left the Queen of Diamonds secure in her hideaway. Only 42 cards are left! Jim adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
