Rotarian Responsible for Today’s Program: Betty Andrews
Betty achieved legendary status a few years back when she creatively revealed that she has a concealed carry permit. Today she reminded us of that before introducing her guest.
Leslie Williams, Nutritionist and Dietician
Leslie Williams is a Burlington native who returned to her hometown with her husband after completing her degrees at App State and Winthrop. She is a registered dietician, which she explained has a higher certification level than a nutritionist, and usually includes, as in her case, earning a Masters degree, a supervised practice period, a board exam, and continuing education requirements. She has a private practice, Leslie Williams Nutrition, LLC.
After three years of practice with Cone Health, Leslie was on the verge of quitting, citing that diets don’t really work. The sixty billion dollar per year diet industry is driven by this fact. People keep looking for the magic solution to their weight problem, but there are none. Leslie decided to approach things differently and now builds her practice around teaching people to get off the diet treadmill and learn to eat “intuitively,” listening to our bodies tell us what and when we need to eat. She helps people to avoid seeing eating as denial and restrictive and move to a more freeing way of approaching nutrition.
Leslie spoke mainly in generalities, but her handout gave several attractive and creative snack ideas that are completely healthy. Obviously there is a very practical side of her nutrition coaching, in addition to helping people get away from weight shaming and a negative approach to good nutrition.
Conclusion
Pete Beck’s table held the winning ticket today, but he drew the King of Clubs, which left the Queen of Diamonds secure in her hideaway. Only 42 cards are left! Jim adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
