Happy Dollar Announcements
- Katie thanked club members for checking on her during her recent absence. She also gave a shout out to the UNC baseball team for winning the ACC tournament.
- David reminded us that he celebrated another trip around the sun yesterday. He also expressed thankfulness for being on the other side of a successful back surgery.
- Micah’s daughter turned four. He shared a humorous story of her adventures as a flower girl at a recent wedding.
- Mike Morrison celebrated the Royals moving to new offices last week. He said the refurbished stadium has more curb appeal. Construction is nearly complete. Regarding the Royals’ reading program, he said they have already visited 19 schools, with only 4 to go. He also shared that his seventy-nine year old grandfather just had successful eye surgery.
- Sam Powell recounted his recent two-week trip to Scotland and Wales, during which he did some genealogical work. He visited Castle Madoc in Brecon, Wales, which was built by an ancestor, Thomas Powell.
Rotarian Responsible for Today’s Program: Mac Williams
Mac has been president of the Alamance Chamber of Commerce since 2005, overseeing remarkable growth in our county. He is a native North Carolinian. He was born in Laurinburg and attended UNC. After graduation he started work in the area of economic development.
Freebird McKinney – 2018 NC Teacher of the Year
As the Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year, McKinney received a number of travel opportunities and gifts:
- He has spent this school year traveling the state, the nation, and globally as a teaching ambassador.
- He received a one-year lease on a new Honda from Flow Automotive LLC, as well as a mobile device from Lenovo valued at about $1,600, an engraved vase, a cash award of $7,500, and a trip to the National Teacher of the Year Conference, as well as International Space Camp.
- He visited China, Mexico, and Australia, as well.
- He also spent time in Washington, DC and spent time with VP Pence.
- McKinney also will serve for two years as an adviser to the State Board of Education and for one year as a board member for the N.C. Public School Forum.
Freebird told us that he accepts any invitation, unless it competes with another event. Although he has thoroughly enjoyed the adventure being a global ambassador, he misses teaching and looks forward to returning the classroom next year. His presentation included about 100 photos that showed many of the places and people that have made the year very special.
Conclusion
There was no raffle drawing today, which left the Queen of Diamonds secure in her hideaway. Only 43 cards are left! Jim adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
