Peter Barcus: Husband, Father, Past President, Present Treasurer, Executive Director of Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, and UNC Grad
Before introducing our speaker, Peter shared that he has been with Rotary for 20 years, during which time he served our club as president, newsletter editor and publisher, occasional secretary, card lottery man, and all around servant of the club. Peter has an outstanding personality, a great sense of humor, and a quick wit combined with genuine kindness and concern for others. He grew up a military brat and had the distinction of attending THE University of North Carolina. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow.
Program: Pat Gilliam, Director of Special Programs for the Burlington Development Corporation
Burlington Housing Authority is an organization dedicated to providing affordable housing for families, elderly, disabled, and handicapped individuals. It owns, manages, and maintains a total of 468 units that are located within seven communities (five multi-family and two elderly) throughout the city of Burlington. It is also the management agent for Spencer Brown Thomas Homes, a 40-unit complex for elderly and handicapped that is owned by First Baptist Church – Apple Street.
Burlington Development Corporation (BDC), a 501(c) 3 non-profit agency was formed under the umbrella of Burlington Housing Authority in 1982. BDC’s goals and objectives are to engage in or assist in development, financing, or operation of low-income housing and provide supportive services necessary for its residents to become academically and economically self-sufficient. In addition to providing housing, BDC offers a wide range of programs and services, many of which have received national awards and recognition.
Our speaker, Pat Gilliam, is the Director of Special Programs for BDC. In the past she was a public housing resident who profited from the services offered, got her education, and made something of her life. Now she has a passion to help others do the same. She related to the club a number of the projects and programs provided by the BDC and concluded by stating that public transportation will greatly benefit most public housing residents. It would be especially beneficial to have a transit link directly to ACC, since one of the goals of BDC is to help people complete a college education. At the present, no such link is planned since Graham declined to join the initiative.
At the conclusion, Sang Ho presented Pat with a children’s book to donate in her name to a local library. (See photo on the right. Pat is on the left. Sang Ho Lee is on the right.)
Card Drawing
Carolyn held the winning ticket, but failed to draw the winning card. Only 49 cards remain. Give it time. Someone will win.
Closing
At the conclusion of the meeting, we all stood to recite the Rotary Four Way Test, and the meeting was adjourned. Until next week…
