Club Business
President Mary Thomas Gilbert was absent. Jim Cartner filled in for her. He also led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. After sharing some interesting historical trivia, Jim introduced our guest, Zach Young, formerly of the morning club. He also served as their president. Next week our program will feature Tom Dayvault, who will talk about the plans for the US 421 corridor from Greensboro to Fayetteville, which is called “The Carolina Core Industrial Development Zone.” Deva Reece is assembling foursomes for the Rotary district golf tournament honoring our new District Governor, Randy Perkins, who normally graces our club meetings. The entrance fee is $80. Area Three clubs will be having a Family Rotary Day at the Burlington Athletic Stadium on Saturday, August 24. Tickets will be $15, $4 of which will go to our literacy program.

Program: Quarterly Club Assembly
Jim began things by sharing our president’s vision for her Rotary year. She wants us to grow membership, develop a signature fund raiser, continue our efforts with literacy, particularly Rotary Reads, and work toward once again becoming a Sustaining Club. It has been a while since every member has donated the minimum $100 toward the Rotary International general fund. The board is discussing how we can facilitate this.
Phil Brown gave the treasurer’s report. He said before paying around $3000 in dues and other obligations, we have $11839.94. He will soon send out the quarterly invoices. He informed us that Kelly Carlisle has transitioned all treasurer duties to him. He is open to someone functioning as his assistant. Any volunteers? We all thanked Phil for his hard work.
Susan Watson and Micah combined to give the membership report. Susan is our Membership Committee chairperson, and Micah is our District Membership Advocate. They presented our two newest members with their Rotary badges. We are privileged to have Brooke Carpenter and Ryan Risko in our club.
Membership is down, which follows a nationwide trend. Over the last four years, our highest membership total was 57. Now we have 47 members, with about 25-30 showing up every week. They encouraged all of us to invite people to the upcoming Rotary Information Hour. (See above.) Last time we signed up two new members. If everyone makes an effort we can grow the club. Susan also mentioned that they would love to have new people join their committee to bring new ideas and energy to the table. Dick O’Donnell, our president-elect, encouraged everyone to be thinking of community and business leaders to invite. He also recommended watching The Five Myths of Rotary video.
Conclusion
Ryan Risko’s table held the winning ticket in our 50-50 lottery. He failed in his quest to draw the Queen of Diamonds, pulling the Ace of Clubs instead, leaving the queen secure in her hideaway. Only 37 cards are left! Jim adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
