Bernie Mann, Publisher of the award-winning Our State magazine was our guest speaker. Mr. Mann has been a Rotarian for 24 years. He became publisher of Our State magazine in 1996 after a 25 year career in the radio business. In 1996, the magazine contained 48 black and white pages and had 23,000 paid subscribers. After viewing the Arizona Highway magazine, he was inspired to show the beauty of North Carolina to readers. The magazine has now grown to 179,000 paid subscribers with a renewal rate of 87%, which has made Our State magazine the 2nd largest statewide magazine in America.
Mr. Mann is passionate about keeping everything positive in the magazine, including the advertising. He wants the magazine to be a place where readers spend 2 hours and have a good, positive, clean time.
An annual event has spun off from the magazine called “Best of Our State”, which is held in January at Grove Park Inn in Asheville. This event has sold out every room for 18 years!
