Club Business
President Mary Thomas Gilbert opened the meeting. Dick O’Donnell led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Mary Thomas shared some interesting historical trivia and meaningful quotes from Winston Churchill and Winnie the Pooh. We had no guests or visitors today. Next week we will have a fun in-house service project, and on the 30th we will have our quarterly club assembly. Deva Reece announced that Rotary is having a district golf tournament honoring our new District Governor, Randy Perkins, who normally graces our club meetings. The entrance fee is $80. Deva is forming foursomes; so, if you are interested, please contact him. Jim Cartner brought to our attention that our Area Three clubs will be having a Family Rotary Day at the Burlington Athletic Stadium on Saturday, August 24. Tickets will be $15, $4 of which will go to our literacy program.

Program: Jeff Bright – Cultural Consultant and Motivational Speaker
Jeff Bright, a member of our club, travels all over to deliver informational and motivational presentations to businesses and other groups. Today he entertained and informed our club by explaining the popular personality profiling system that uses animal names to identify people’s dominant and secondary traits. The Beaver, Lion, Otter, and Golden Retriever categories were popularized by Gary Smalley in 1964, but Jeff claims that everyone after the Greeks stole the concept. Jeff has developed his own inventory of questions to help people understand their makeup and how to properly relate to the other types. He gave some interesting snapshots of how the various personality types handle various situations. He said the biggest challenge is learning how to properly communicate to the other personality types. One of the more interesting points he made concerns Rotary. He posited that Golden Retrievers, who make up about 58% of the population, are motivated primarily by good causes. Jeff told us that he does not believe Rotary sells its “cause” as well as it should. He touted Bono’s recent advocacy as an example of how we might do better.
Conclusion
True to form, the front table once again held the winning ticket. Sam Powell failed in his quest to draw the Queen of Diamonds, however, leaving her secure in her hideaway. Only 39 cards are left! Mary Thomas adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
