Club Business
President Mary Thomas Gilbert brought the meeting to order. Jim Cartner led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Mary Thomas acknowledged Mikey Morrison’s birthday and noted that he and his wife are purchasing a house. Cliff Parker introduced a prospective member, Richard Atkins, who used to be a member of a club in Greensboro and has recently moved to Burlington. It was announced that former member Bill Huey has passed away. He was a member from 1991-2011. A sympathy card was passed. Program: David Moore – Health Insurance Update
Through a mix up between Mary Thomas and David Moore, David did not have an outside speaker for today. However, after introducing himself (and the secretary remembering she was supposed to take notes), he gave an update on the local health insurance market. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina has recently made the decision to include only UNC-CH related providers as “in network” for its individual plans as a cost cutting measure. The 9,000 Alamance County residents who have individual insurance plans through BCBS now cannot access Cone / ARMC hospital and many other providers in the county without going “out of network.” This has frustrated David Moore and many of his clients.
After David spoke, Mikie gave on update on changes to the farm system being contemplated by
Major League Baseball. Several MLB owners, primarily of large market teams, are advocating reducing the number of minor league teams by 42 as a supposed cost cutting measure. One of the teams on that list of the 42 is our local Burlington Royals rookie league team. Of course this would be a blow to our community. Mikie said that Congress has the power to stop this move, since MLB is subject to federal anti-trust regulations. He urged us to contact Congressman Walker to advocate against the elimination of our local team. He also made some snarky comments about the large market Houston team and their cheating ways. Trash can booms were heard in the distance.
Conclusion
Sid Little’s table held the winning ticket today, but, sadly and all too predictably, he failed to pick the winning Ace of Spades. Only 49 cards remain. Our odds will be slightly better next week. Mary Thomas led us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test before we adjourned. See you next time.
