Program: StoveTeam International
Stuart Sioussat hosted the program which was a video describing the works of StoveTeam International founded by Nancy Sanford Hughes, a Rotarian, in 2008. Has provided over 76K more efficient, smokeless stoves to date in Latin America.
Over 3B people worldwide cook with firewood or another biomass. Carbon emissions are higher than all vehicles, especially black carbon. Deforestation, global warming, and significant health issues, including high death rates are caused by cooking over open fires. Wood smoke is the biggest health hazard. 2X death rate from AIDS and Malaria combined.
Developed a low-cost stove design using the “rocket elbow” that greatly improves stove efficiencies. Stoves can be manufactured by local people where they are needed using brick and mortar or cast concrete. Stove manufacturing is providing local jobs.
Still use wood for fuel as it is the most available. Improve efficiency by 50%. 14% as much smoke is generated by the more efficient stoves. Each stove reduces CO2 emissions by 15T per year. 20 hours per week expended on gathering fuel. Significant improvement in quality of life and productivity because of the more efficient stoves.
StoveTeam is operating with local partners in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Honduras.
Stoves cost $100 and are funded by donations. More information and the opportunity to donate can be found at www.stoveteam.org
The organization has received grants from local Rotary Clubs and Rotary International. While StoveTeam has done much, the need is enormous in Latin American and around the developing world.
Carolyn Rhode commented that her children were adopted from Guatemala. She is personally aware of the problems in Latin America. We are so blessed in this country. Improving the quality of life in Latin America has a real impact on what is happening on our southern borders.
There will be a baseball outing on Thursday, August 5th to see a Burlington Sock Puppets game. $20/person. Tickets, food, and beverage included (“Thirsty Thursday”). RSVP required!
Prior to closing with the 4-Way Test, President O’Donnell commended DG Tommy Rosser for his efforts during this difficult year.
