Club Business
President Jim Cartner brought the meeting to order. Pete Beck led prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Jim shared some important historical trivia , including that on this date in 1892 the Coca Cola Company was founded. Betty Andrews introduced her coworker, Brooke Carpenter, a West Point grad and prospective member. Thanks for your service, Brooke! We hope you decide to join us. We need good men. Next week Thomas Phelps will provide our program. Bonnie will fill in at the podium while Jim continues training at his new job. Jim will return to us on April 2. I trust we can hold out until then.

Happy Dollars
- Thomas Phelps paid one dollar to tell us he was glad to be back after an extended absence due to job responsibilities. Welcome, back. We missed you!
- Randy Perkins survived attending the Rotary International Assembly January 13-19, 2019 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego. He said it was fantastic and thanked us for our support on his District Governor journey. We are proud of you, Randy!
- Micah Fox told us that his wife Kari spent some time in the hospital but is recovering well at home now. He has been doing double duty, as you can imagine. Get well soon, Kari. Hang in there, Micah!
- Jim Cartner was thankful that Katie Dukeshire is helping him with the literacy program. We all agree that Katie is the best at these things. He also expressed gratitude that Mary Thomas has recovered from a bout with the flu. Welcome back, Mary Thomas Gilbert!
- Carolyn Rhode announced the new partnership between LabCorp and ACC, which will provide the Biotechnology Building with much needed equipment. She also asked our support in purchasing Girl Scout cookies to help her group with their upcoming trip to Belize.
- Dick O’Donnell recently returned from a couple of trips when he experienced two different individuals recognizing him as the indomitable Man in Green. Great marketing, Dick! He also made a public health announcement, informing us that Stevia makes its way through our bodies in one hour, sugar in four, but the fake sweeteners can take 4-6 weeks! Avoid fake!
Program: Club Assembly
Each quarter, whenever we have a fifth Tuesday, our club conducts what Rotary calls a club assembly, a time to catch up on club happenings and plans. President Jim Cartner told us that our club presently has 47 members. He asked Micah to fill in for Susan Watson, our Membership Committee Chair, to catch us up on that end of things. Micah now serves as Membership Advocate for our district, an important role. He told us that our club has its own projector now, which will be stored at his office. If you are going to need it at a meeting, please let him know at least a week in advance, if possible, to make sure it shows up when you need it. He informed us that two of the four persons who attended our most recent Membership Information Session want to join the club – Logan Sharp with Fisher Wealth Management and Erin Cockman with Pinnacle Wealth Partners. We plan to conduct these sessions once a quarter; so, be thinking about who you want to invite to the next one. We want to push our membership above 50 in the very near future.
Jim introduced Katie Dukeshire by saying some very exciting things are happening in our club and the area. Katie told us that our club has reached 31% of its Foundation giving goal for the year, reminding us that part of what we donate will come back to our club to be used in our programs. So far our club has given or plans to give the following:
Feed the Hunger Packathon | $3200 |
Rotary Reads | $2600 |
Royals Million Minute Reading Program | $1000 |
ACC Current Events Challenge | $ 500 |
Total | $7300 |
Katie led us through some literature explaining things in more detail, all of which published on this website. Just click on the Members tab above and the Documents link to see them. She went over our five year plan for developing literacy. This is a giant leap forward and will involve all four area Rotary clubs. We will be partnering with ABSS, the Burlington Royals, and the Times-News. In March/April we will conduct a fund raiser to cover the costs of the literacy program, which will involve our four area clubs selling 100 $100 raffle tickets. The prize will be a $4000 family vacation for four, leaving $6000 to cover our program. We plan to make this an ongoing yearly event.
