Club Business
From the boardroom…
The Rotary Club of Alamance now offers Corporate / Family memberships. The quarterly dues will be $25 per quarter higher and this membership option provides for other business or family members to attend the meetings in place of the official member. Further details are available on our Become a Member tab.
At the meeting…
President Mary Thomas Gilbert was back from vacation and brought the meeting to order. She expressed appreciation for being able to gather with the Rotary family. Trip Durham led us in prayer and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. She shared some bits of literary and general history, which included this being Alfred Hitchcock’s birthday, who famously said that TV brought murder back into the home. We had no guests or visiting Rotarians. Next week Jason Crutchfield has the program.

Happy Dollar Announcements
- Mikie Morrison announced that the Royals have already surpassed last season’s attendance numbers with nine games to go. He distributed t-shirts and prizes left over from their annual summer reading program which our club supported. He also told us that Rotary will have a picnic at the ballpark on August 24. The cost is $15 per person, four dollars of which will go to Rotary Reads. Jim Cartner will sing the national anthem.
- Trip Durham represented past member Paul Mauney who recently attended a Royals game in his new hometown of Greenville. Paul says, Hey.
- Mary Thomas celebrated surviving the first day and a half of the BCA school year.
- Carolyn Rhode announced that Alamance Community College will have their third annual ACC Day on August 23, the first Friday of the Fall Semester. She encouraged members to take a yard sign and put it up the week before that day. Please return the signs afterward.
Program: Members Share…
Our speaker mixed up his dates; so, Mary Thomas improvised by asking members to share something interesting about themselves that other members might not know. She led the way by sharing that when she was in college, one night as she was closing the student store, a man with a gun held her up. Thinking it was some sort of joke, she didn’t take him seriously until he cocked the pistol. In fact, she offered him brownies and gum, too. She gave him the money, he ran, and was caught later that night behind the Carolina Inn.
Mac Williams related that he belonged to a fraternity located behind the Carolina Inn. Hmmm…
Stuart Sioussat shared that in all his years in banking he has never been robbed; however… one morning at 4 am he was called by the police asking him to come down to the ATM machine to help retrieve a finger. A woman had reached into the ATM door as she was pulling away in her car, not a good move, and apparently lost her finger. I suppose her lawsuit didn’t get very far, since no one could find the finger. Stuart said it was definitely the weirdest day of his life.
Not to be outdone, Deva told an even more amazing story. While following an ambulance, the rear door swung open and out dropped a cooler. Thinking it could be important, he stopped to retrieve it. The ambulance kept going and he had no way of getting their attention. Unable to resist his curiosity, he opened the cooler. To his amazement, a severed toe lay atop some dry ice. Not knowing what to do, he called a toe truck.
Knowing that following Deva was going to be difficult, Pete Beck told the club that his son, Pete IV, is an avid kayaker, hiker, and camper. This summer to led a group on a hiking and rafting expedition from the summit of Grandfather Mountain to the source of Wilson Creek. They followed the creek until it became navigable and floated the rest of the way through the beautiful gorge to the pick up point. You can view his amazing videos at his River Kings YouTube channel. The expedition has been written up in Eastern Packrafting newsletter, too.
Conclusion
Sid Little’s table held the winning ticket today, but he failed in his attempt to draw the Queen of Diamonds, leaving her secure in her hideaway. Only 36 cards are left! Katie adjourned the meeting by leading us in a recitation of Rotary’s four-way test.
