Club Business
President Jim Cartner brought the meeting to order. Cliff Parker led the prayer and pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Steve Carter, our newly elected County Commissioner, came as a guest today and submitted his green card for membership. It will be great to have him back in our club! We will host a Rotary information hour at 11 am at 40 West Grille prior to our regular meeting next week. Please invite prospective members to attend. As a reminder, on December 5 we will participate in a special Rotary Packathon sponsored by Feed the Hunger at the Holly Hill Mall from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Rotarians can sign up online or at a weekly meeting. Our club will have contributed a total of $2800 to the cause by then. Also, set aside December 18 for our annual Dirty Santa Luncheon, which will be at our regular meeting place. That meal will be from a special buffet line just for us. Buy a gift for whatever sex you are. Jim insists this will make everything just right. Next week Mikey Morrison has the program. Click here to see all scheduled program dates and responsibilities.

Katie Dukeshire paid a dollar to celebrate the successful Veterans Day Give Back event. 97 Vets and their significant others were on hand. Thirty-nine businesses contributed support. This was their seventh year. Good job, Katie!
- Pete Beck told the club about his recent ministry trip to Honduras. You can read more about it here.
- Steve Carter thanked those in the club who voted him into office and said that he will do his best to properly represent the entire community.
Member Responsible for Today’s Program: Brad Moser
Brad Moser has been a member of our club since 1996. He self identified as the member who usually arrives late. (We are just glad he makes it so regularly.) Brad was born and raised in Alamance County, moved to Raleigh during his school years, and returned to our area in 1989. The rest is history. For a number of years he served as our treasurer, which makes sense. He is a CPA with Gilliam, Coble, and Moser LLP. Brad is married to Mel, and they have three grown children. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow.
Gavin Stevens: Executive Director – Alamance Community Foundation
The Alamance Community Foundation, founded in 1991, is a charitable organization dedicated to strengthening Alamance County for present and future generations through philanthropy. ACF provides donors with a flexible way to accomplish their giving goals, maintains a permanent endowment to address the community’s evolving needs, and encourages private giving for the public good. Its vision is threefold:
- To facilitate giving that improves lives in the community,
- To maintain permanent, tax-advantaged endowment funds, and
- To partner with donors to shape effective responses to community issues and opportunities.
Currently ACF manages $15,000,000 in assets in over 70 different funds. Gavin Stevens is the executive director. She came on board last year when ACF separated from its Greensboro partner foundation. ACF is a hybrid between a public and private foundation. Its design allows smaller investors to pool their money to make a significant impact on the local community for good. They do not have one particular area of focus and specialize in helping investors realize their giving goals through:
- Being a builder and caretaker of endowed funds,
- Providing services to donors to make giving easier,
- Writing and providing grants, and
- Being a convener or catalyst to foster collaboration among investors and NPOs.
Gavin gave us ten tips for year-end giving.
- Talk to your advisor.
- Consider your yearly income in order to balance your giving.
- Review your stock portfolio and consider giving stocks instead of cash.
- Remember to have your gift checks postmarked by December 31 to count for 2018.
- Give online. It makes things quick and easy.
- Prioritize to whom you wish to give.
- Roll over your IRA as a donation.
- Prefund your giving to take advantage of the new tax laws.
- Create a multi-generational family giving plan.
- Let ACF do the heavy lifting. It’s what they do.
- David Moore asked what the minimum threshold for ACF is. Gavin said $10K. He also asked how large is ACF’s staff. Gavin said it consists of herself and a bookkeeper.
- Frank Longest asked if the various funds are in a common pool. Gavin said yes and that their funds are managed by the Trust Fund Company of the South.
- Trip Durham asked what are ACF’s long range goals. Gavin responded that she is working on raising community awareness, partnership creation, and addressing root causes of community problems.
- Jim Cartner mentioned that ACF helps fund our annual Memorial Day Project.
- Gavin touted ACF’s flexibility, saying that they can help donors create scholarships, memorial funds, and other desired giving vehicles.
- Brad encouraged investors to keep money local instead of giving it all to Uncle Sam.
Conclusion
Jason Crutchfield’s table had the winning raffle ticket, but once again there was a failure to draw the Ace of Hearts. There are only 16 cardsleft and the pot is growing. Next week may produce a long awaited winner. Finally we all stood to recite Rotary’s four way test before Jim adjourned the meeting.
Until next time…
