Chuck Stedman: Lawyer, Supreme Court of US Appointee
Before introducing our speaker, Chuck shared his extensive law experience, including working in many circuits of our courts, including but not limited to Small Claims, District, Superior, NC Court of Appeals and Supreme Court of NC and US.
Program: John Stubblefield, French Wine Society Educator
After retiring from an extensive career in hotel management and the wine industry in 2001, John and his wife Linda retired to Burlington in 2001. He has attended French Immersion studies for the French Wine Society in 6 different international cities, received his Bordeaux certification at Johnson and Wales University and Sommelier Certificate from the Sterling School of Hospitality. His presentation shared a brief history of wine in NC:
- Most important factor in determining wine quality: climate soil shape
- NC is best known for muscadine and vinifera grapes
- A brief history of NC wine:
- 1840s: First winery – Weller’s Vineyard
- Grew to 25 wineries in NC
- 1860s: Civil war hurt wine business
- 1890s: Industry bounced back
- 1904: Virginia Dare wine – national best seller
- 1909: Prohibition – begins packaging in mason jars instead of bottles
- 1939: Prohibition repealed
- 1965: State funding for wine research
- 1985: Biltmore winery opened
- 1986: NC wine and grape council
- 2002: NC Wine Festivals begin
- 2005: 48 wine producers in NC
- 2015: 160 wineries in NC
