Jeff Smythe – Burlington Police Chief
Gail Moore owns and operates Home Instead Senior Care. She has two daughters and four grandchildren. She introduced our very own, Chief Jeff Smythe, to update us on the recent crime concern for our community.
Chief Smythe encouraged us all to not live in fear that our community is safe. He shared the details and timeline for the recent murders in Burlington. In each of the situations, the individuals had some knowledge of each other and all had previous criminal records. The individuals have no employment (only one individual was a high school graduate; all others dropped out of high school) and chose to solve their problems with firearms.
Chief Smythe is encouraging the community if they “see something” they need to “say something.” Over 300 citizens attended the recent community meetings. All the comments captured during the meetings can be found on the police department’s website.
We can help make the community a better place. Speak out for funding for mentorship programs, education, reading programs, etc. to help keep children in school and prepared to hold jobs. Our crime is directly related to poverty, lack of education and drug abuse/addiction.
