Program: Burlington Police Department – Shoot, Don’t Shoot Scenarios
Chuck Stedman was responsible for our program today. Check is a long-time member of our club and resident of Alamance County. He attended Walter Williams High School, did his undergraduate studies at UNC, and went to law school at UT. After working for a while in the US Attorney’s Office in Knoxville, he moved back to our area, where he maintains his practice, Stedman Law Firm.
Sergeant Graham Sappington, who is a training officer at BPD, gave a nice presentation of the four tenets governing when officers are allowed to use deadly force.
- To protect himself or others from death or serious bodily injury.
- If a person is using a deadly weapon to effect an escape.
- To prevent someone from causing death or bodily harm if not stopped.
- To prevent a prisoner escape.
The most interesting part of the presentation was a demonstration of several different scenarios by a visitor to the club and Office Chris Edwards.
No one won the lottery today. The meeting concluded with reciting together the Four Way Test.
