Club Business
Past President Micah Fox filled in for President Jim Cartner, who is on leave with a new job assignment. Pete Beck led the invocation and the pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Our prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery go out to Bonnie Whitaker. Using Jim’s notes, Micah shared some important historical trivia before asking Jason Crutchfield to reintroduce his guest and wife of 19 years, Shea. Happy anniversary! Check below to see the birthdays and anniversaries in February and the upcoming program responsibilities. Next week Sam Powell will have the program.
Micah Fox announced that our club will have its second Membership Information Session on Tuesday, February 26, an hour before our lunch meeting. Please be inviting people to this important meeting. We can break the fifty mark soon, if everyone will get on board. Inviters and invitees are both welcome. This is a really good thing and worth our support.
Also, the board decided today to cover registration costs for any member who goes to the April 26-27 District Conference in Greenville, SC at the Hyatt. This is an amount of $225.

Member Providing Our Program: Debbie Porch
Debbie has been a member of our club for ten years. She works with incoming District Governor Randy Perkins at his business, Prime Personnel Resources, in Business Development. She lives in Snow Camp with Chuck, her husband of 26 years.
Program: Mendy Greenwood – NC Department of Insurance Region 4 Director
Mendy Greenwood has a background in public affairs and marketing. She lives in Jamestown with her husband of 28 years and two or her four children.
She began her presentation thanking our club for the opportunity to share. She is not an insurance expert, but an expert on the services provided by the Department of Insurance, an agency started more than 100 years ago. The commissioner is an elected official in NC, which is a rarity. Only seven states do this.
The mission of the NCDOI is to promote a stable insurance market through unbiased regulation and to protect the lives and property of every citizen in all 100 counties while fostering superior, user-friendly service, courtesy and respect. In an ever-changing environment, it is the vision of the Department of Insurance to maintain the stabilization of the insurance industry in order to provide more products, competitive prices and consumer protection. Mendy emphasized the importance of citizens being able to readily contact the agency via phone (855-408-1212) or the internet (www.ncdoi.com).
NCDOI saved NC consumers some $60 million in 2018 in a variety of ways through several programs. Over $40 million was found through the agency’s lost life insurance policy locator services. Another fifteen million dollars were saved through SMART NC health insurance appeals.
NCDOI serves the state beyond what most people normally connect with the insurance industry. SHIIP provides seniors with free and unbiased counsel on Medicare issues. NCDOI also regulates the bail bond industry and the Office of the State Fire Marshall.
When Mike Causey, our current commissioner, began his term, he immediately added twenty new insurance fraud investigators because some 88% of previous fraud cases had gone uninvestigated due to personnel shortages. Additionally, Causey added inspectors to catch up on lagging fire station inspections. Some stations had not been checked in twenty years, which can cause insurance rates to be higher.
Mendy concluded her talk by saying that the agency is looking a future regulations affecting Uber, Lyft, AirBnb, and VRBO.
Conclusion
John Beshel became the latest casualty in the raffle, when he failed to draw the ever elusive Ace of Hearts. There are only 8 cards left now and we are pretty sure the Ace is in there still. We now have over $1100 in the pot. Somebody is going to win a bundle! Micah adjourned the meeting with the four-way test.
