Club Business
President Jim Cartner brought the meeting to order. He also led the prayer and pledge of allegiance to the US flag. We received great news today that Phil Brown volunteered to serve as our new treasurer. Thanks, Phil! Randy Perkins, ever the best salesperson for our club, introduced our guest, Louis Judge, Associate VP at ACC. He said he is interested in joining the club. Let’s hope so! Jim mentioned our upcoming birthdays and anniversaries as listed below. Our next meeting will be January 8, since Christmas and New Years Day fall on Tuesdays this year. Cliff Parker has the program. There will also be a board meeting that day at 11 am. See you there, Phil!

- Joseph Williams shared that the recent Rotary night at the Holly Hill Mall Packathon was the largest Rotary event yet, with over 100 in attendance. (See photo below.) This included area Rotary clubs and the Rotaract and Interact groups. Joseph said that the Southern HS and Eastern kids competed for who could be the loudest. All had a good time. He expressed thanks especially to our club for making this possible. We donated $2800 to the cause.
- Thomas Phelps said the game at the Schar Center may or may not be free admission Tuesday night and he may or may not be working. Plan on it! He encouraged everyone to visit the Schar Center, which, he claims, is like a mini version of the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill.
Christmas Party Memories
As usual our annual Christmas luncheon was worth attending. The special buffet line featured a traditional Christmas dinner – chicken, turkey, dressing, green beans, sweet potato casserole, rolls, salad, and dessert.
After our meal and opening announcements, we settled in for the Dirty Santa gift swap. Probably due to our not meeting last week due to the snow, a few of our folks forgot to bring gifts. Great ingenuity was displayed by these members. One left (not so ingenious), one went to his car and found an unused (we hope) Barnes and Noble gift card, one went back to his office to retrieve his gift, but our guest, Louis Judge, may have been the most original. He walked next door to the Cutting Board and purchased a gift card. Good job, Louis!
Most of the gifts were typically very nice. A couple of them vied for the most unwanted. Sam Powell received some sort of ceramic boot, the purpose for which was not known. He thought that it was intended to be a planter. John Beshel opened a package that had one flashlight and batteries, the other two having been previously removed. Randy Perkins ended up with a selection of ugly sweater attachments. No fights broke out over gift stealing; so, overall it was an enjoyable afternoon, highlighted at the end by the news of Phil’s taking on the treasurer duties.
Conclusion
Jim concluded by expressing his appreciation for being part of our club, saying that the Rotary Club of Alamance is a great organization filled with people who joined for the right reasons. Finally we all stood to recite Rotary’s four way test before adjourning the meeting.
Until next time…
