Club Business
President Jim Cartner brought the meeting to order. Phil Brown led the prayer and pledge of allegiance to the US flag. Jim shared some interesting historical trivia. Our guests were Bridgette Yaeger, a school board candidate, who was introduced by Don Jennings. Steve Carter was also on hand. He is a former member and is running for county commissioner. He said he is leaning toward rejoining the club. Let’s hope so! Jason Crutchfield’s wife, Shea, also attended the meeting.
Next week Stephen Taylor will give a presentation on the Rotary Foundation. As a reminder, on December 5 we will participate in a special Rotary Packathon sponsored by Feed the Hunger at the Holly Hill Mall from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Rotarians can sign up online or at a weekly meeting. Also, set aside December 18 for our annual Dirty Santa Luncheon. Just in — the Micah Fox family just welcomed #5 into the world! Congrats! Club Assembly
Katie Dukeshire – Foundation Chair
Katie Dukeshire, a past president and current Foundation Chair, gave the first presentation. She mentioned Woofstock and the Humane Society. She said the RUSH (Rotarians United to Stop Hunger) grant came to $400, which will go toward the December Feed the Hunger Packathon. An Area 3 literacy grant also was approved which amounts to $6000. This is a Rotary Reads project done in combination with the other area clubs. Dr. Jean Maness from ABSS is giving us a list of resources and training that is available for those who may wish to tutor kids. Our club has been assigned to Eastlawn Elementary.
Owen Campbell with WBAG radio will be doing a show in December or January to promote this service project. The Times News is deciding whether to do a series of articles in the paper or an article in the Alamance Magazine. So far only 1 % of the club’s membership has participated in the SHARE program. Our goal is 100% for the year. Don’t forget to contribute.
Jim Cartner – Club President
Echoing our District Governor’s words, Jim said that Rotary is a membership organization whose product is service. We need to focus on growing our membership, if we are going to more effectively serve our community and the world. He encouraged members to identify some key business colleagues and friends to invite to Rotary. He said a regular meeting is perhaps not the best way to introduce Rotary. Instead, consider inviting them to a Rotary Information Session at 11:30 am on Tuesday, November 27, just before our regular meeting. Of course, they can stay for lunch and listen to our speaker afterward.
Jim asked as to consider what child care organizations and churches could benefit from having literature about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library on hand. He said we will be getting books to distribute in the Spring. We will be asking members to sign up to read to kids for an hour at Eastlawn at that time. Some may wish to volunteer for longer term commitments. Jim envisions four member teams, each person showing up one week a month. We need to help break the cycle of illiteracy in Alamance County, where 14% read at a low level.
Conclusion
John Beshel had the winning ticket today, but failed in his attempt to draw the Ace of Hearts. There are only 19 cards left and the pot is growing. Then we all stood to recite Rotary’s four way test before Jim adjourned the meeting.
Until next time…
