-
Canoe and Kayak Outing: David Moore announced that, at least for the time being, the kayak trip is not going to happen due to underwhelming support. Maybe next time he floats the idea, more will get on board.
-
Online Directory: Carolyn Rhode announced that the board decided to put a directory of our members on our website. She asked that each member check to make sure the data is correct, and to let her know if corrections are in order. The link to the document is located on bottom of the Home Page of this website.
-
Membership Survey: Richard White and Debbie Porter announced that they will be emailing a survey by the end of the week. Please complete it and return it promptly. They hope to have the results available at their Membership Committee presentation on the first Tuesday in September.

Happy Clams
- David Moore just checked off a big item on his “bucket list” by taking his two sons to Scotland on a golfing holiday. They played the Old Course at St. Andrews and seven others. He said he birdied the Road Hole and probably could have won the British Open.
- Dick O’Donnell just returned from a sixteen-day trip to Walla Walla, WA and back to visit his grandson, Carter Joseph. The trip back was by car. He said that the Hwy 212 stretch was magnificent.
- Sang Ho Lee paid two bucks to announce that he just finished hosting twenty-eight visitors from S. Korea for two weeks. The second part of his Happy Clams Announcement was that Lee Brothers Academy was voted #1 on Alamance County by the Times-News survey.
Program: Fund Raising Committee Update
Tripp Hilliard and Dick O’Donnell co-chair the Fund Raising Committee this year. They have been tasked with leading our club toward raising between 8 and 11 thousand dollars to help fund our various club projects. Theirs is no small undertaking since our club is “famous” for writing checks rather than getting involved in projects, a culture that is gradually changing with the influx of new and younger members, who, perhaps, have less money and more time to give. Tripp and Dick bring a lot of enthusiasm to the committee, which they hope will infect the club over the next year. They proposed several ideas, some of which are definite plans. Others are percolating and need further thought and input from other members in the club. Some of the proposals are listed below.
-
Fall Golf Tournament
-
Elon Football Day
-
Wine Tasting and Celebrity Auction
-
Poinsettia Sale
-
Winter Elon Basketball Game
-
Restaurant Nights where part of the proceeds will go to the Rotary Foundation
Dick said that they are very open to suggestions. David Moore offered that one auction is enough, an opinion that was held by others. Dick asked club members to consider donating goods, services, and other things of value, such as a weekend in a beach home, that can be auctioned and the money go to our club. Three or four members immediately responded to this suggestion by pledging donations. I think we can all agree that fundraising is at the very top of our priority list. We may as well try to make it as fun and interesting as possible. Let’s get behind Tripp and Dick and make it happen!
Card Drawing
David Moore’s table held the winning ticket, but he failed to pull the winning card. The “jack” pot continues to grow. There are now only 39 cards stand between you, the jack of hearts, and the pot. Your odds are getting better every week.
Closing
As is our custom, we all stood to recite the Rotary Four Way Test, which was led by President Dukeshire, who afterward adjourned the meeting. Until next week…
