Eric Durham – Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Debbie Porch is the Business Development Manager for Prime Personnnel Resources. She and her husband, Chuck, have been married for 24 years and live in Gibsonville.
Debbie introduced our speaker, Eric Durham, Development Manager for the Piedmont Triad JDRF chapter.
JDRF works to provide research funding to help find a cure for Type 1 diabetes. Type 1 currently has no cure and is an auto-immune disease that attacks the pancreas. Type 1 diabetes is not a result of poor food or lifestyle choices. Type 2 diabetes is caused by poor diet and lack of exercise and can be prevented.
JDRF works to make treatments available and accessible for everyone and they do so by working with insurance companies.
The following are treatments currently in the testing stages that could help improve the quality of life for those living with Type 1 diabetes:
- Artificial pancreas – this treatment is currently being offered in Europe and should be in the US by April 2017. The artificial pancreas works to keep blood sugar levels at a constant 120.
- Glucose control – also known as smart insulin. This treatment reduces the shots needed per day from 8-10 to only 1 as needed.
- Encapsulation – about to start in human trials but this treatment is very expensive. It involves implanting beta cells.
The JDRF Walk is November 5th at Elon University. Goal for this year’s walk is $155,000. If you know someone who has recently been diagnosed, please tell them to stop by the JDRF tent to pick up their “bag of hope.”
