Gale Murphy – Junior Achievement Programs Manager
Angela Parham graduated from UNC –Chapel Hill in 1995 with a Business Administration degree. She spent 15 years in the financial services industry with Wachovia in the Winston-Salem and Greensboro markets prior to taking nearly 6 years out of the workforce to stay at home with her children. In February of 2015, she started a new career journey managing the Preferred Corporate Partner program at Burlington Christian Academy. BCA’s corporate partners are local businesses that have chosen to support BCA and Christian education. These businesses receive special marketing and advertising benefits within our school community and BCA currently has 30 corporate partners.
Angela has been married to my husband, Tommy, for 17 years and has 3 daughters; (Kaitlyn)16, (Caroline) 12 and (Mary Katherine) 6.
One of Angela’s first community service passions during her early career in banking was with Junior Achievement. She volunteered for nearly 5 years presenting the world of business to children in Winston-Salem public schools. She always thought she would grow up and be a teacher one day but changed her mind mid-way through college. So maybe it was her love of education mixed with her interest in business…but Junior Achievement was a perfect fit!
Gale Murphy is the Programs Manager for Junior Achievement of Central North Carolina, which serves a six-county service area. Her areas of service include Guilford, Alamance, and Rockingham counties. She has also served as the development/communications specialist. She holds a degree in Business Administration from Shaw College at Detroit and is a Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) and a Certified Workforce Development Professional (CWDP) with an endorsement in Business & Employer Services (BES).
Gale enjoys working outdoors and watching old movies. She has two adult children and one granddaughter that live out of state. Gale is a former Junior Achievement student from Detroit, Michigan and feels she has come full-circle in her current position in helping our future workforce succeed in a global economy.
The Junior Achievement program material is updated every 2-3 years to ensure it accurately reflects the current global economy. The programs are “teacher requested” and go along with material already being taught in the classroom. JA of Central NC served 10,000 students last year and are set to serve 17,000 this upcoming school year!
The program offers students “hands on” experience and reinforces why it is important to stay in school. By investing in our future workforce it allows us to have a positive impact on the front end vs a potential negative impact on the back end (jail, etc.)
JA offers volunteers everything they will need when they sign up to teach a class. You work directly with the teacher to schedule the day/time that best fits your schedule. There are several delivery options available:
- Traditional delivery – once per week
- JA in a Day
- Job Shadowing program
- Career Fairs
Gale shared she is trying to grow the Job Shadow program in Alamance County. The program allows students to go “on site” once a week of 5 weeks. The student has an one-on-one mentor for the day. JA just completed the program for Grimsley High School students in Greensboro with UPS. The students were able to learn UPS is more than just big, brown trucks that deliver items to your house.
JA offer teachers, volunteers and students to provide feedback through a 3rd party source so they can continuously improve the program.
Gale thanked Cliff Parker for the Town of Elon Police Department’s service to JA. Several officers serve as classroom volunteers at Elon Elementary School.
